Lack of Consensus

Letter to the Editor from Len Colamarino
Published in the San Luis Obispo Tribune, October 17, 2008

Dear Editor:

Atascadero's biggest problem is the lack of consensus. It produces uncertainty, which hinders new business. Due to Atascadero's divisiveness, Trader Joe's spurned a lucrative offer to locate here.

A recent letter-writer criticized my neutrality on Measure D-08. I could curry favor with voters on one side or the other by endorsing their position. But a city council candidate who is really trying to overcome divisiveness in Atascadero must resist the pressure to take sides on Measure D-08.

The city council won't be voting on Measure D-08. So staying neutral has no practical disadvantage. And it positions me when I take office to work with people on both sides. Candidates who are taking adversarial positions are unnecessarily slamming that door shut.

Letter writers offended by my neutrality want another cheerleader on Measure D-08, when they should be seeking balanced, professional leadership on the city council. My door-to-door canvassing has shown that to be a rare attitude, as almost everyone is as fed up with the divisiveness as I am.

Atascadero voters should cast their vote on Measure D-08, then support me in my stand against divisiveness. A vote for me is a vote to give reconciliation, unity and professionalism a chance.

Sincerely,

Len Colamarino
